April Monthly Safety Message: Awareness and Community Support

April is both Autism Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, providing us with an important opportunity to educate ourselves and take action in support of these critical issues. Safety and inclusion are responsibilities we all share, and by staying informed, attending training, and engaging in community initiatives, we foster a safer and more supportive environment for everyone.

Supporting Autism Awareness

· Understand the individuals with autism may communicate, socialize, or respond to situations differently. Practicing patience and respect helps create an inclusive environment.

· If you see someone who appears overwhelmed, offer assistance calmy and give them space if needed.

· Engage in awareness events to learn more about autism and how to support neurodiverse individuals in our community.

Taking Action Against Sexual Assault

· Consent is Key – Consent is active, ongoing, and can be withdrawn at any time. A simple way to remember the elements of consent is using “FRIES” – Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, and Specific.

· Attend the Consent Education Event on April 15th at 11 AM at Western’s Kumm Center, where Western Campus Community Safety will host an interactive session with a loaded fry bar.

· Be an active bystander – if you witness concerning behavior, step in safely, seek help, or create a distraction.

Get Involved with Safety Initiatives

· Operation River Watch – Volunteer to patrol Riverside Park on Thursday – Saturday nights to help prevent alcohol-related incidents. Sign up is available on UGetConnected.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

By educating ourselves and taking action, we can create a safer, more inclusive community. Stay informed, get involved, and support those around you.

Stay safe and engaged this April!
