The ninth Multicultural Children’s Literature Event from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at UW-La Crosse will focus on children’s literature, culture and life in Ethiopia. This year’s event branches out to include local community advocacy efforts, as well as the academic and K-12 communities.
Guest speaker Jane Kurtz, children’s author, speaker and literacy advocate, will talk about her life growing up in Ethiopia, her children’s books on Ethiopia. She will also discuss her work as co-founder of the Minneapolis-based Ethiopia Reads, a non-profit program that brings literacy to Ethiopian children through partnerships with communities, libraries, teachers and educator training programs.
Gundersen Health System’s Global Partners’ team will highlight their work with Project Mercy in Yetebon, Ethiopia, where the team developed community-to-community partnerships focused on healthcare, education and community development initiatives.
Amy DuPont, news anchor and producer with WXOW News 19, and Mark Bronson, cameraman and producer, will share their adventures when they traveled to Ethiopia with Gundersen - Global Partners in 2014. They shot and produced the Midwest Emmy winning documentary, “Project Mercy.”
Following a brief introduction, these guests will be part of a panel discussion of their work and experiences in Ethiopia.
The program is co-sponsored by UW-La Crosse Murphy Library, the School of Education, the Research & Resource Center for Campus Climate and the La Crosse Public Library.
