Brief biography

I have been fortunate to build my career in both academia and industry, focusing on data analytics, applied mathematics, management of knowledge and risk.

In the past 13 years, I held different academic roles at various universities worldwide, including:

  • Teaching Associate Professor in the Business School at UWL, where I have been teaching the course on Information System Design and supporting students to achieve their academic goals and beyond. 
  • Analytics Adjunct Professor in the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, Canada, where I created the Analytics Think-tank, chaired the 2014 International Conference on Data Analytics, and developed and taught the course on Quantitative Methods in the Master of Healthcare Administration. 
  • Member of Advisory Board of the new Finance, Innovation and Technology Certificate from the Fields Institute of Mathematics – University of Toronto.
  • Assistant Professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou, China, where I created and led the Risk Analytics Lab and taught courses such as Matrix and Linear Algebra, Data Visualization, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Applied Statistics, and Research and Technology. I was invited and served as a keynote speaker at multiple academic and professional conferences, such as the 2021 and 2022 CSAE International Conferences on Computer Science and Application Engineering, China.
  • First Sentry Endowed Chair in Business Analytics at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, USA, where I created and taught various courses in Data Analytics and Business majors, including Marketing Analytics, Data Visualization and Communication, Analytics and Decision Making, Principles of Data, Capstone Data Analytics, and Principles of Production-Operations Management. I also chaired the 2019 Great Lakes Analytics Conference.
  • Visiting Professor at Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, where I participated in the creation and development of the Data Science Program.
  • Corporate Faculty for the MSc in Analytics and Information Systems Engineering & Management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Pennsylvania, USA, where I created and taught various courses such as Analytics I & II, Risk Modeling and Assessment, Analysis and Design of Modern Information Systems, Business Intelligence and Decision Support Systems, Applied Project in Information Systems Engineering & Management, Research Methodology & Writing, Graduate Thesis.
  • Faculty of MBA at the University of Fredericton, Canada, where I created and taught three courses in the Analytics Stream of the MBA, including Principles of Analytics, Introduction to Prescriptive and Predictive Analytics, and Advanced Topics in Analytics and Big Data.
  • Visiting Professor at EAFIT University in Colombia, where I created and taught the course on Risk Monitoring in the Master of Risk Management.
  • Visiting Scholar at Chongqing University, China, where I conducted big data research on public transportation in the region of Chongqing.

Before transitioning to academia, I had extensive experience in the business and financial industries with various roles and capacities:

  • Founder and Principal of IQAnalytics Inc., a Research Centre and Consulting Firm in Ottawa, Canada.
  • Knowledge Management Advisor and Quantitative Analyst at EDC Export Development Canada in Ottawa.
  • Regional Director of PRMIA (Professional Risk Managers International Association) in Ottawa.
  • Executive Vice-President and Vice-President of Marketing and Planning for insurance companies and banks in Colombia.

I hold a Ph.D. in Knowledge Management from Aston Business School at Aston University, UK, an MSc in Mathematics from Concordia University, Canada, a Certification in the Advanced Management Program at McGill University, Canada, and an MBA and bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Los Andes University, Colombia. My main research interests are in Strategic Risk, Risk Analytics, Strategic Intelligence Development, and Knowledge Management applied to Enterprise Risk Management. I have published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and books. My latest two books are:

  • "Risk Analytics: Data-Driven Decisions under Uncertainty" (2023, CRC Press)
  • "Strategic Risk, Intelligence, and Digital Transformation" (2023, World Scientific).
