Brief biography

Dr. Hongyi Bian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at UW–La Crosse. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Computer Engineering and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Iowa State University.

His research focuses on trustworthy AI/ML systems, ubiquitous computing, situation-aware modeling, and digital health, with real-world applications in edge AI, hybrid cloud computing, blockchain-based services, indoor localization, and smart home technologies for successful aging in place. His work has been published in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. During his graduate studies, he also conducted research at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center and T-Mobile USA.

He enjoys working with students on research that leads to practical applications. At Iowa State University, he mentored more than 40 student teams on full-stack software projects and advised undergraduate researcher through the NSF-funded IINSPIRE LSAMP program. He received Iowa State's Teaching Excellence Award in 2024.

Outside of work, he enjoys watching sports and spending time with his husky, KK.
