Brief biography

Katie taught in the School District of La Crosse for six years before coming to UW-L. Her main duties included teaching choir, general music, show choir, and directing drama productions at the middle and high school levels. Her UW-L roots run deep, starting with her parents meeting during marching band camp in the 80s. Katie continues to play trumpet with the UW-L Alumni Marching Band and in pit orchestras for area musicals. Outside of campus, Katie music directs and performs in area community theatre productions.

Katie Fries, College of Business Administration; and Nic Barilar, Dylan Curvin, Dave Harlan, Mandy Kolbe and Nate Mohlman, all Theatre & Dance; presented "tick, tick...BOOM!" at as part of the 2025-2026 season on Nov. 7 in Frederick Theatre. The production, directed by Nic Barilar, featured the work of Katie Fries (musical director), Nate Mohlman (scenic designer), Mandy Kolbe (lighting designer), and David Harlan (sound designer), and Dylan Curvin (technical director) along with students Paige Huling (assistant director), Miranda Logan (costume designer), A Muma (assistant scenic designer), Coleman Breedlove (assistant lighting designer) Apollo Kasprzyk (assistant props & costumes designer), Ozzy Glazer (dramaturg), Morgan Millard (stage manager), and Leah Costello (assistant stage manager). It ran Nov. 7-16, 2025.
