Career

Professional history

I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology with emphasis in Crime, Deviance, and Social Control from the University of Missouri-Columbia and spent 17 years at Missouri State University as a faculty member (assistant to full professor), with over eight of those years serving as Department Head of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology. From 2011 - 2016 I was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Pittsburg State University in Kansas and then was appointed Provost at Southeast Missouri State University from 2016 - 2018.  After spending one year as a faculty member and Interim Department Chair at Southeast Missouri, I began my current appointment as Dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at UWL.

Karl Kunkel, College of Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities, served as discussion leader at the annual CCAS (Council of Colleges of Arts & Sciences) conference. Dean Kunkel facilitated a discussion on faculty burnout and mental health concerns at the annual meeting, which hosted 425+ deans and associate deans from across the nation.

Karl Kunkel and Charles Martin-Stanley, both College of Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities, presented "The Liberal Arts at UWL" at UW System Dean's Meeting on Oct. 31, 2019 in River Falls, WI. Dean Kunkel and Associate Dean Martin-Stanley represented the college at this meeting which was geared towards discussing the importance of the liberal arts, sharing aspects of progress on CASSH's strategic plan, and highlighted the re-naming and re-branding of the college.
