Overview
The program is designed to cultivate personal and professional growth for new and existing employees at UWL. In short, two colleagues will have the opportunity to engage in a mutually beneficial mentoring partnership that centers the mentee’s sense of belonging at the institution, professional growth, and establishment of a growing UWL network.
Broad institutional goals
- More effective onboarding, creating a sense of belonging inside and outside the department or area.
- Jump start a network for new staff and expand the network of existing staff
- Fuel new connections, collaborations, ideas, and support personal and professional growth
- Boost retention of new and existing staff
- Provide additional opportunities for professional development
- Understand the UWL culture and breakdown real and perceived power structures
- Develop an inclusive culture that allows people to bring their whole selves to work
Mentee goals
- Help in establishing a UWL network
- Identify areas for professional growth
- Increase knowledge of higher education and UWL
- Practice self-reflection and establish and grow professional identity
- Develop an understanding of mentorship and improve your capacity to mentor
- Explore other higher education professions
Mentor goals
- Learn with your mentee as they share new and different experiences and perspectives
- Create space to share your knowledge and experience
- Reflect on your own experience and grow in your own professional development
- Leave your legacy by engaging with and developing the staff that follow you
- Build a professional network for future collaboration
- Learn about the profession through the lens of a professional new to UWL
Commitment
The mentoring program asks that mentors and mentees spend at least 1-2 hours per month to participate in the program. This includes:
- Coming together as a mentor & mentee (e.g. in-person connections, coffee or lunch meetings, emails, etc.)
- Attending on-campus professional development opportunities together (optional)
