What should I know about appointments?

What are appointments like?

Our appointments are collaborative and conversational. Here is what will happen in a standard appointment:

  1. The tutor will ask you about your assignment, class, and where you are in your writing process. They'll also ask what your concerns are so far.
  2. You and the tutor will read your piece outloud, if you have writing to share. If you don't, that's ok!
  3. Then, you'll talk about ideas to improve your writing.
  4. After 30 minutes, you'll wrap up by discussing your next steps and fill out a client feedback form.

What should I bring?

  • A copy of the assignment sheet you received from your professor, if you have one
  • Any notes, drafts, outlines, etc., you have for the assignment, if you have them

Who visits the center and why?

On any given day, you are as likely to see a biology major as an English major, a freshman as a senior using the Writing Center. Some people are working on their resumes, others are brushing up on APA documentation, and still others are discussing paper topics or overcoming writer's block. The people who visit the Writing Center are a diverse group, but they all share a commitment to improve their writing.

What kind of appointment do I need?

You can always walk in when we're open to get feedback on your writing, but we recommend making an appointment. We offer two different kinds of appointments:

Writing Consultation (Face-to-Face)

Our most common and recommended appointment! This a thirty-minute, one-on-one appointment with a writing center tutor about a specific writing assignment. You and a tutor will review your writing together and collaborate to address your concerns about your project.

Online Feedback (Asynchronous Online)

If you have a draft of a piece you're working on and would like comments and feedback in the margins, you can upload your work to us. A tutor will spend thirty minutes reviewing your work and provide helpful feedback for revision. We require 48 hours to return your work to you.

New for Fall 2025!

Write On Wednedays!

Do you need to buckle down and just write? Come join us on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 pm if you need a quiet space and a tutor to hold you accountable to be productive. You can meet briefly with a tutor to discuss your writing goals, write independently for as long as you like, and then wrap up by discussing your next steps with the tutor. Stay a little bit, stay the whole time--it's up to you, and we'll have tutors on hand to answer any questions that pop up. Every Wednesday evening, all semester long.

Can I walk in? Do I need an appointment?

Yes, please walk in! If we are not working with other students, we'll gladly help you. If we're busy, we can let you know our next availability and work with you to schedule an appointment.

Our busiest times are 3-5 pm and evening, as well as midsemester and the end of the semester.

If you need a space to just write, join us on Wednesdays from 6-8pm! No appointment necessary.

Can you help me with my resume or other application materials?

Yes! We review just about any kind of writing a student brings in. We can help you with:

  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Personal statements
  • Handshake and Linkedin profiles
  • Scholarship or Study Abroad essays
  • Grant proposals

The Writing Center's Mission & Values

As a unit within the Tutoring and Learning Center, the UWL Writing Center supports students from all disciplines in becoming more effective and confident writers in both academic and professional situations. We provide space for students to generate ideas, collaborate, draft, write, revise, and edit in a supported environment. Trained undergraduate peer consultants work one-on-one to engage students in dialogues that meet their immediate needs in relation to specific writing projects and also support their development as writers. We believe that writing is a powerful tool not only for communicating existing ideas but for discovering new ones; that learning to write is a life-long process; and that all writers benefit from sharing work in progress with knowledgeable, attentive readers.

We offer feedback and support for writers who are

  • learning new genres and styles for academic disciplines.
  • developing, revising, or polishing reports and essays.
  • gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing research materials.
  • seeking to elevate their writing styles.
  • developing application materials for scholarships, graduate programs, and jobs.

Writing Center consultants are here to assist you with all of your writing needs. Use our computers, our reference books, our couch, our staplers, our tables--but most of all use our friendly and knowledgeable staff.
