AP and retroactive credit
Relocation
Due to the demolition of Cowley Hall and construction of Prairie Springs Science Center Phase II, the Mathematics & Statistics Department will be temporarily relocated to 223A Cartwright Center. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The UW-La Crosse Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a number of ways for students to receive additional course credit. It is to a student's advantage to make use of these opportunities to increase the number of credits earned, which will in turn allow for earlier course registration. In addition to the information below, make sure to visit the Admissions Office Credit By Exam page for further opportunity to receive course credit.
Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
UW-La Crosse grants course credit to students who receive a 3 or higher on their AP exam. The specific mathematics and statistic course credits are listed below:
- Students with a score of 3 on the AP Precalculus examination, are awarded credit for MTH 150 College Algebra (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Precalculus examination are awarded credit for MTH 151 Precalculus (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Statistics examination, are awarded credit for STAT 145 Elementary Statistics (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 3 on the AP Calculus AB examination are awarded credit for MTH 175 Applied Calculus and be given placement into MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB examination are awarded credit for MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 3 on the AP Calculus BC examination, are awarded credit for MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC examination, are awarded credit for both MTH 207 Calculus I and MTH 208 Calculus II (8 credits)
International Baccalaureate (IB)
UW-La Crosse grants course credit to students who receive a 4 or higher on their IB exam. The specific mathematics and statistic course credits are listed below:
- Students with a score of 5 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 150 College Algebra (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 6 or 7 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 151 Precalculus (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 4 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (HL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 151 Precalculus (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (HL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (SL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 160 Mathematics for Business (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 4 on the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (HL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 150 College Algebra (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 5 on the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (HL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 175 Applied Calculus (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 6 or 7 on the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (HL) exam are awarded credit for MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a national program administered through the College Board. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will follow The American Council on Education (ACE) guidelines and recommendations for minimum scores for awarding credit in all subject examinations. Students should contact the Counseling and Testing Center 608.785.8073 for information about CLEP, and to order the exam.
Students may receive credit for passing the following CLEP subject level exams:
- Students with a score of 63 or more on the CLEP College Mathematics exam are awarded credit for MTH 123 Mathematics for Informed Decision Making (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 63 or more on the CLEP College Mathematics exam are awarded credit for MTH 150 College Algebra (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 61 or more on the CLEP Precalculus exam are awarded credit for MTH 151 Precalculus (4 credits)
- Students with a score of 64 or more on the CLEP Calculus exam are awarded credit for MTH 207 Calculus I (4 credits)
Retroactive Credit
Students taking MTH 207 Calculus I, MTH 208 Calculus II, MTH 308 Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, MTH 309 Linear Algebra, or MTH 310 Calculus III: Multivariable Calculus, and earning a grade of "B" or better, will be given retroactive credit for MTH 151 Precalculus provided that the student’s transcript shows no record of prior or concurrent enrollment in MTH 151, MTH 207, MTH 208, MTH 225, MTH 308, MTH 309, or MTH 310.
