March is Here!
Hello from the Division of Access, Belonging, & Compliance.
Spring inches ever closer (let’s try not to jinx it), and our much needed and well deserved midsemester break is just a couple weeks away. Meanwhile, here in AB&C we keep working to bring you connection, community, and growth in a variety of ways.
We’re packing three signature events into the first half of March, high-kicking off with the Pride Center’s 22nd Annual Drag Show (+ 5th Annual Art Show), hosted by Dee Dee Purr, on March 7. This show is a smash-hit year in and year out, so don’t miss it!
Next up is an incredible speaker brought to us by DREAM: Emily Ladau, author and advocate, will give an inspiring talk on inclusion and her book Demystifying Disability, on March 10. Enjoy a chance to meet the author, participate in a book signing, and—BONUS!—the first 100 attendees receive a free copy.
Also, don’t forget, March is Women’s History Month, and we’ll celebrate on March 12 with a Couch Conversation featuring Dr. Eileen Narcotta-Welp from UWL’s Exercise & Sports Science Department. Dr. N-W specializes in the cultural study of sport, feminist theory, and media representation of women in athletics. Free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided!
Finally, a quick reminder about the Campus Community & Belonging Focus Groups coming up this March. Building on the Campus Belonging survey from last spring, these focus groups will help inform future policies, programs, and practices that promote inclusion and connection. Student focus groups will be taking place throughout the month of March. Watch your inboxes for more info—participating students will receive a $25 cash incentive!
Wishing you all a restful and rejuvenating Spring Break!
In Community,
Stacy Narcotta-Welp, Vice Chancellor
Dr. Nevin J. Heard, Asst. Vice Chancellor

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT
What student orgs, teams, or leadership roles are you a part of?
I am a peer educator at the Pride Center, Co-President of The Drama Club, and an active student within the Theatre and Dance, and Art departments.
What campus resources have been meaningful for you?
Ever since I was a first year, I have greatly valued the Pride Center. They offer everything from a specialty LGBTQ+ library to name change forms and flexible housing. Along with their resources, the actual Pride Center is one of the most welcoming spaces I have frequented while being a UWL student. I have spent hours on the couches, chatting with folks, solving puzzles, laughing at nonsense jokes, and relaxing from my busy life.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
Hobbies, passions, or fun facts:
I love anything creative! You will often see me in either the sculpture studio, the theater shops, or my own room, creating anything from a life-sized Muppet, to a plaster cast of my own head. I aim to create what I call "living art," with collaboration and curiosity at the center. Additionally, I am big into analyzing books, movies, plays, and any other medium of art or storytelling. I learn that by expanding my view of art, I expand my view of the world. This activity is best enjoyed with a mug of lemon tea! Aside from creative things, I love to spend time with my friends, listen to new music, and go on side quests of all shapes and sizes!
Favorite spot on campus:
The green room for the theatre and dance students in the CFA! Not to brag, but we have the comfiest chairs and a lovely, chatty atmosphere.
Book, movie, game, or show you love right now:
The film I Saw the TV Glow directed by Jane Schoenbrun! It is such a unique piece that has stuck with me for the past few years. I highly recommend it!
Hidden talent or surprising skill:
I can actually Irish dance! I started when I was 5 years old and have since retained practically every step I have learned. I also know how to play the Irish flute and tin whistle. What can I say? I have been an enjoyer of niche hobbies for years!
ACHIEVEMENTS & HIGHLIGHTS
Something you're proud of:
I am incredibly proud of all the theatrical work I have done while being a student at UWL. I have made over 15 puppets (with over 10 more currently in the works), prop designed, dramaturged, acted, and explored leadership positions. I am so grateful to be in an environment with people who support my creative endeavors and encourage me to think outside of the box.
Recent accomplishment or milestone:
In January, I attended the Region 3 American College Theater Festival (ACTF) and presented some of my theatrical work. I won the Randy Lutz Allied Design and Technologies Award for my prop design for Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really and was named the LMDA National Dramaturgy Fellowship Regional Finalist for my dramaturgical work on tick, tick...BOOM! I was hugely proud of my work for these shows and formed some brilliant connections while attending ACTF!
LOOKING AHEAD
Career goals / Dreams after graduation:
Although it would be a childhood dream come true to work with the Jim Henson Creature Shop or Lucasfilm, my main goal is to continue exploring my love and curiosity for my craft. Whether this be through graduate school, repertory programs, or community theater, my aim is to focus on the joy I get from creating something new with other brilliant individuals. Eventually, I would love to be a theater professor and teach puppet construction, theater history, and prop design!
One piece of advice you'd give to other UWL students:
It is okay not to know everything right away! If we were all experts in our fields upon arriving to college, why would we be here? As long as you are open to learning, you are not a failure. If you slip up, brilliant! You are one step closer to learning something new!
