Mehtap Eklund

A page within Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL)

Dr. Mehtap Eklund is housed in the Accountancy Department and teaches Accounting courses such as Accounting Principles II (ACC 222) and Cost Accounting (ACC 325) that have an average enrollment of 35 students. This semester Mehtap decided to flip her classroom and create a type of hybrid/blended learning experience for her students.  This approach blends both online synchronous and asynchronous strategies to help students engage with the content.

In this strategy, students watch the lectures as pre-recorded content that is provided to the students online through canvas on their own time.  The live sessions (or synchronous sessions) are then deliberately designed to have students apply the content through application style activities.

Mehtap’s main piece of advice for selecting synchronous and asynchronous mode of instruction and using the flipped method:  Her “laundry test for learning is: “if students can conceivable fold their laundry while engaging in an experience, then flip it– record it– post it”.
