This program addresses the needs of students, school districts, and the community in building competency in literacy. The program is comprised of 18 credits of graduate course work and is completed online. Program start dates are spring and summer terms.
A Reading Teacher license is required to teach reading for more than one class per day, to teach in a Title 1 reading program, or to teach in a reading recovery program (if not part of a self-contained classroom).

This multifaceted, online program is designed to meet the needs of educators who are interested in (a) ongoing professional development in reading education and (b) certification in the State of Wisconsin as a Reading Teacher (1316 license). This program is comprised of 30 credits of graduate coursework including a thesis project. Program start dates are spring and summer terms.
This certification program prepares candidates to teach reading for more than one class per day, to teach in a Title 1 reading program, or to teach in a reading recovery program (if not part of a self-contained classroom).
Candidates will be endorsed for licensure at program completion.

This is a dual certification program that prepares individuals to direct reading programs or work with reading teachers, classroom teachers, administrators, and others as a resource teacher in reading. The program is 36 credits, including course work and action research. Program start dates are spring and summer terms.
Candidates will be endorsed for licensure at program completion.

Options for individuals with a bachelor's degree & Reading Teacher (1316) license

This program is designed for individuals who hold a Reading Teacher (1316) license and would like to add a Master’s degree and Reading Specialist (5017). Adding a degree and additional licensure prepares reading teachers to move to an administrative role, directing reading programs or working with reading teachers, classroom teachers, administrators, and others as a resource teacher in reading.
Twelve credits are transferred in from the student’s 1316 coursework. It is important to note that this coursework cannot have taken place more than 7 years before the student’s completion of the program. The program is 18 credits of course work and action research over 3 semesters. Program start dates are spring and summer terms.

Options for individuals with a master's degree & Reading Teacher (1316) license

This add-on certification is provided for candidates who are ready to take on increased leadership in literacy.
Candidates must currently hold a Reading Teacher (1316) license and have completed a Master’s degree which includes a significant culminating project related to reading. This program provides candidates with the administrative Reading Specialist (5017) license, which prepares individuals to direct reading programs or work with school districts and CESA organizations as a resource for literacy. The program is comprised of 6 credits and is completed in one semester. Program start dates are fall and spring terms.

Standards for Reading Professionals:
Aligned with the InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) administrative standards, the Graduate Reading Program has been collaboratively designed by School of Education (SoE) faculty and staff to align with best practices and current research in the field.
The program philosophy is aligned with the Standards for Reading Professionals of the International Literacy Association (ILA). The overarching categories of specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions addressed in the ILA standards are: Foundational Knowledge, Curriculum and Instruction, Assessment and Evaluation, Diversity and Equity, Learners and the Literacy Environment, Professional Learning and Leadership, Practicum/Clinical Experiences
