Julie Schumacher receives 2025 University Staff Excellence Award
At UW-La Crosse, staff members quietly make the campus run, often going above and beyond in ways that aren’t always noticed. Each year, one of those individuals is formally recognized through the University Staff Excellence Award.
This year, that honor goes to Julie Schumacher, a financial specialist in UWL's Business Services office. The award celebrates non-instructional staff who show exceptional service and commitment to the UWL community, with an $800 honorarium and recognition plaque.
For Schumacher, receiving the award is both humbling and affirming.
“I'm honored to be recognized by my peers,” Schumacher says. “Personally, it’s rewarding to know that my efforts to support others are appreciated. Professionally, I strive to perform at a high level every day, and this recognition affirms that commitment.”

One example of that commitment came when Schumacher managed invoice payments during a colleague’s unexpected leave.
“I’m grateful for the support from the academic department associates in departments I don’t typically handle,” Schumacher says. “It was a true team effort.”
Nominees for the University Staff Excellence Award are evaluated not only on their day-to-day contributions, but also on how they go above and beyond in service to UWL and the wider community.
“During my time at UWL, I have rarely come across someone with the exceptional customer service, respect and kindness that Julie demonstrates,” says Mark Haakenson, controller in the Business Services Office. “Beyond her professional contributions, Julie fosters a sense of community by bringing treats to the office, organizing food drive donations and being a friend to her colleagues across the university.”
For Schumacher, those small gestures are just as important as the big projects.
“I enjoy bringing in treats as a small gesture of appreciation — it’s a simple way to boost morale and foster a positive work environment,” she says.
Other colleagues echo Haakenson’s comments, noting how Schumacher’s kindness and commitment create a positive work environment.
“Julie’s contributions have made a significant and lasting impact on our department and university as a whole,” says Spencer Wyman-Green, assistant controller in Business Services.
At the heart of Schumacher’s motivation is enjoyment of her work and the satisfaction of helping others succeed.
“I genuinely enjoy my work and helping colleagues navigate the ever-changing processes,” Schumacher says. “I want people to feel supported and know that Business Services is here to help.”
