UWL offers several scholarship and tuition reduction programs for out-of-state students. Students are encouraged to apply for admission early to receive the best consideration for available awards.

Non-Resident Merit-Based Scholarships

In recognition of outstanding academic achievement, UWL awards non-resident merit-based scholarships to out-of-state students. Admitted students are automatically considered for these funds; no separate scholarship application is required.

Competitive award process with examination of

  • Application and admission to UWL before the February 1 priority deadline
  • Cumulative GPA
  • Class rank or percentile
  • ACT/SAT scores

Funding is limited; students are encouraged to apply early for admission to be considered for available funds. Scholarship award notifications are mailed from Admissions to selected students beginning in late fall and continuing until funds are depleted.

Return to Wisconsin

Eligibility

  • Non-resident undergraduate students (excluding Minnesota residents)
  • Students whose parent, stepparent, or grandparent graduated from UWL

Benefits

  • 25% reduction of the difference between resident and non-resident tuition rates
  • Estimated tuition and fees, with the Return to Wisconsin discount applied, are available on the Cost to Attend page

Requirements

  • Submission of the Return to Wisconsin Application
  • Maintenance of good academic standing and satisfactory academic progress as described in the Undergraduate Catalog
  • Full-time status (12 credits or above) is required on the first day of fall and spring semesters. 

Midwest Tuition Rate

Admitted students are automatically considered for these funds; no separate scholarship application is required. Funding is limited; students are encouraged to apply early for admission to be considered for available funds. Award notifications are mailed from Admissions to selected students beginning in late fall and continuing until funds are depleted.

Eligibility

  • New freshmen who are residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, or South Dakota (transfer, re-entry, and graduate students are not eligible)
  • Students cannot receive both the Midwest Tuition Rate and Return to Wisconsin benefits

Competitive award process with preference for the following credentials:
Due to the competitive nature of the award process, recipients' academic credentials often exceed these benchmarks.

  • Top 15% class rank
  • Unweighted GPA of 3.95 or higher
  • ACT scores above 25 or SAT scores above 1200

Benefits

  • Non-resident tuition adjustment to approximately 150% of Wisconsin resident tuition
  • Estimated tuition and fees, with the Return to Wisconsin discount applied, are available on the Cost to Attend page.

Requirements

  • Maintain good academic standing
  • Maintain a UWL GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Enroll full-time (12 or more credits) each fall and spring semester
  • Remain continuously enrolled during fall and spring terms
