Philosophy

A page within Adventure program

Philosophy: The Exercise and Sport Science Adventure Program's first priority in all programs is to ensure that all participants are emotionally and physically safe. Participants are given the opportunity to challenge themselves and take risks to the point where they are personally comfortable. The ESS/UWL Adventure Program believes in the benefits of leading a healthy active lifestyle through adventure activities and outdoor pursuits.

What We Do: We provide educational and recreational adventure and outdoor experiences to the university community and Coulee Region. The emphasis of the program is on adventure education utilizing the challenge course, climbing wall, and outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing to create a fun and meaningful experience for participants.

A challenge course is a system of cables, poles, wires, and ropes at heights varying from 1 to 40 feet off the ground that are constructed to form a series of challenges. Individuals and groups negotiate through the high challenges while tied into climbing ropes, wearing helmets, harnesses, and other technical gear.

Outdoor pursuits are enjoyable leisure time activities pursued in the outdoors for the purpose of recreation, education, enjoyment, self-realization, and the intrinsic value of the experience itself.

Who We Are: We are housed in the Exercise and Sports Science Department at UWL. Our staff consists of the two full time trained professionals and UWL students who have been trained on the challenge courses and have experience leading groups in the outdoors.
