Community of Practice, Artificial Intelligence

A page within Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL)

CATL is recruiting for a community of practice for AY 2023-24 to share and compile the various ways instructors are currently using or responding to the opportunities and challenges presented by AI technologies. Ideally, we’d like to put together an AI Summit (to take place in May 2024) of UWL instructors who are working with, and/or against, AI technologies in their classrooms. This community of practice provides an opportunity to share and reflect on the uses and abuses of AI in the classroom, and we will work towards a goal of disseminating our work to other instructors across the university.

Potential topics include:

  • AI for feedback and assessment
  • AI for course design
  • How students use AI technologies
  • How to talk with students about AI
  • The uses and types of AI
  • The potential abuses of AI
  • AI and Eagle Advantage competencies

This CoP is intended to connect instructors who are using, interested in using, or skeptical about using, AI technologies in their classes. There are many different examples of AI technologies, and many different ways of using these technologies in and around the classroom, and we are seeking a diverse array of approaches.

Participating in a CoP provides instructors…

  • an opportunity to be more intentional, specific, and clear about quality teaching and learning and the various ways they may go about achieving it
  • independence and flexibility to enhance their courses by helping them identify the areas of globalization/internationalization suitable for their curriculum
  • time to develop and improve their collegiality through the development of a team that has the potential to provide support and encouragement.
  • space for turning knowledge and research into practice
  • an avenue to pursue development of knowledge and skills that facilitate effective intercultural teaching practices in support of global learning for all students
  • a chance to explore teaching and learning from a different perspective/discipline
  • insight and/or materials useful to promotion and tenure

Anyone who is using, interested in using, or skeptical about using, AI technologies in their classes. There are many different examples of AI technologies, and many different ways of using these technologies in and around the classroom, and we are seeking a diverse array of approaches.

To participate in the experience over the academic year would take about 15 to 20 hours of your time.

Dates for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 – TBD by the group - Initial Meeting Friday, September 22 from 1:10-2:05pm

Meetings are intended to connect people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to interact and to provide a shared context to communicate and share information and explore new possibilities in a way that builds understanding and insight.

Readings, resources, thought questions, etc. will be shared before meetings. Additional investigation, exploration, and is encouraged on your own between meetings.
