Sarah Pember

A page within Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL)

Dr. Sarah Pember in the department of Health Education and Health Promotion and teaches a variety of courses including HED 207: Youth Health Issues and CHE 450: Implementation, Administration, and Evaluation of Health Education programs.  Sarah is excited to share her method of keeping students engaged during small group discussions by utilizing collaborative word documents.  During their discussions, students share a collaborative document that allows her to keep track of student discussions without having to ‘pop into’ the discussion rooms.  She has found that just didn’t have the same feel as checking in on groups during an in-person class.

To facilitate this, she creates a collaborative document she shares with her whole class and uses the “page break” function in word to have a separate page for each group.  Her advice for implementing this strategy? “Keep the groups consistent throughout the semester to allow for a comfort level with each other as topics get more difficult and challenging” although she admits it is often difficult to “ensure that all students are contributing equally to discussions. “
