Definition
Students who take one or more courses (for credit or audit) without the intention of completing a certificate or degree are classified as Non-degree seeking.
Examples include, but are not limited to, individuals who are:
- Enrolled at another institution who wish to take a summer/winter term course before returning to their home institution
- Not currently enrolled at UWL and wish to participate in a UWL education abroad program
- Completing prerequisite courses for graduate program eligibility
- Taking courses to meet continuing education requirements

Eligibility
Students must complete required prerequisite coursework before applying for course entry.
Graduate non-degree applicants must contact the academic program offering the desired course/s to confirm course availability and enrollment eligibility
Materials for Admission
Application
Complete the Universities of Wisconsin Application
- Select "No" to the question: "Are you applying as a degree-seeking student?"
- Non-degree students are not required to pay the application fee
Monitor Application Status
Applicants access WINGS to:
- Confirm receipt of application materials
- Track application status
Instructions for completing account activation and gaining WINGS access are emailed to students within a few days of application submission.

Application Review Process
Admissions decisions for non-degree students are mailed via USPS approximately 1-2 weeks after application completion (i.e., submission of all required items).
Course Registration
Registration instructions are sent to admitted Special Non-Degree students prior to the term's enrollment date. View course descriptions and schedule of classes for the upcoming term.
Special Non-Degree students register after degree-seeking students; course availability may be limited. Courses that are full or require special permission from the instructor, department chair, and/or dean require an override.
- Override permission forms must be requested from the academic department corresponding to the course in question
- Submit completed override forms to UW-La Crosse Records and Registration, 117 Graff Main Hall

Students are billed according to the UWL tuition & fee schedule. Visit our Cost to Attend page to access this information and estimate your bill.
Considerations:
- Minnesota residents should apply for reciprocity.
- Special Non-Degree students are not eligible to receive financial aid except in specific situations such as:
- Student is completing course/s as part of a qualifying, approved license/certificate
- Student is completing undergraduate coursework to fulfill prerequisites for a master's program
