Dr. Casey Tobin (Psychology Department), who teaches courses such as Human Sexuality, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, has utilized video recordings to create a feeling of community in her online courses during the Fall 2020 semester.  Rather than having students submit the traditional written responses to formative assessments such as muddiest points, minute papers, or class summaries, Casey has her students turn in video reflections.  These 2-3 minute videos have helped her feel more connected to her students which is one of the biggest challenges in an online course. To help her students connect with her, she posts her own responses for the students to see.

The biggest challenges she has encountered, is the time it takes to view their videos, and advises to start small, on a single assignment.  “There is a learning curve for some to upload videos, but I think it is worth it”.  Casey has students utilize their own preferred recording method and then posts a Knowledge Base article to help them sort out how to submit their videos for the assignment through MyMedia/Kaltura
