Hanadi Shatara

A page within Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL)

Dr. Hanadi Shatara is a social studies educator housed in the History Department and teaches future social studies middle and high school teachers.  In the interest of connecting and engaging her students in the online environment Hanadi innovated through the use of check in activities where she utilized different visual scales (in the scale of cat or inflatable duck) and gifs/memes to get her students to loosen up and destress.  Once she introduces the visual scale, students are moved into their breakout rooms to discuss. Students were a bit shy about it in the beginning, but they warmed to the idea and were quick to participate each week.  As a result, she then observed her students utilizing it with their own classes during student teaching or field hours!

She advises that it is important to do what is most comfortable to you. “You can also use online tools like Miro, Mentimeter, Polleverywhere, and Jamboard to gage students’ feelings for the day/week.”  This is a great way to connect with students in a quick yet fun way and builds a community in your online classroom.
