Jennifer Kosiak

A page within Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL)

Dr. Jennifer Kosiak is Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics where she teaches a variety of courses geared toward teaching mathematics to future Elementary School Teachers as well as General Education courses such as MTH 150 (College Algebra).  When teaching in person, Jenn works hard to create a collaborative community in her classroom where students are constantly working in groups to complete daily problems as well as longer term group projects.  With our move online, this was particularly challenging, and Jenn found that the Google application Jamboards was a way to simulate this collaborative space in the virtual environment.

Through the use of this real time whiteboarding application, she could see her students’ thoughts and ideas as they were working with the material in their virtual groups. She does caution that writing/drawing, as with many online whiteboarding applications, is difficult and may present a challenge depending upon the task you assign your students.  But with up to 50 collaborators on a single Jamboard, you could use it for larger enrollment lectures.  Just assign each of your groups to a separate slide or even a separate Jamboard.

For faculty interested in learning more about Jamboards, you can try one out by clicking here or you can experiment on your own by accessing your Google applications by clicking on “Faculty and Staff” on the UWL homepage and then navigating to your Google Drive.
