Dr. Sierra Rooney from the UWL Art Department teaches courses including Art History, Art Appreciation, Museum Studies, and Contemporary art.  With the movement of courses online, she decided students needed some help in engaging with their content in a virtual environment.  To help students envision the beauty of art, she leveraged the increased virtual programming to expand learning opportunities beyond the confines of the physical classroom.

Her classes attended virtual events and lectures, visited museums and other cultural institutions from around the world through virtual tours. Through these experiences, students are exposed to new voices and new places that would not be available to them in a traditional classroom setting.

To aid her students in getting the most out of these experiences, she created guidelines or instructions to help them engage in the variety of virtual programming options.  These virtual resources are a good way to bring the community into your classroom regardless of the size of your course.  Her advice to faculty, “Sign up for mailing lists!” she advises, it keeps her up to date on a variety of virtual offerings across disciplines.
