Application procedures

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis to the SPE program via an online survey.  An admissions committee will meet to review applications and determine who will be accepted to the program.

Students should apply to the SPE program using the following link:

SPE Add-on Certification Admission Application (to be open Week 1 through 4:00pm Friday, Week 3)

Students must upload the following items into the online survey:

  1. Documentation of 25-Hour Special Education Experience
  2. Statement of Intent
  3. Copy of all teaching license(s) (those held in WI or other states)
  4. Copy of DPI stipulation letter, if holding temporary/emergency license in WI
  5. Candidates must complete the self-report Criminal Background Check form as part of the Admission Survey.


  1. Admission to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is a separate admission process and should be completed prior to or concurrently to admission to the Special Education Program. Candidates should apply to the University as a “Special Non-degree-Seeking” candidate. See the admissions page for registration information.
  2. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  3. Candidate indicating ineligibility to Wisconsin teacher licensure will not be admitted.
  4. The Special Education Program Admissions Committee will notify applicants of admission decision in a timely manner to facilitate registration for the appropriate semester.
  5. Admission decisions will be sent to the applicants via email.

Appeal & Reapplication Policy 

Candidates who meet the stated criteria may apply for admission to the Special Education Program. Candidates who are not admitted may appeal the admission decision by submitting a letter of appeal to the DES Department Chair within 30 days of the appeal notification. The candidate may be asked to meet with the Special Education Admission Committee as part of the appeal process. Candidates will be notified of the appeal decision in a timely manner. The appeal decision is final.
