University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Admissions

The Admissions Office is looking for individuals who are outgoing, friendly, possess excellent communication skills, and are excited about UW-La Crosse. Candidates who complete an application will be asked to participate in an individual interview. After individual interviews are completed, selected applicants will be invited back for a group interview.

Application Requirements
• Undergraduate students who will be at least sophomore standing by fall semester. 
• Minimum grade point average of 2.50. 
• Have at least two semesters of school left before graduating (not including student teaching or off-campus study & study abroad).

Vanguard Responsibilities

  • Check email daily
  • Vanguards are responsible for knowing the updated information presented during  meetings and in weekly email communications
  • Attend and complete all Vanguard training sessions
    • Fall training is in August the Sunday and Monday before classes begin
    • Spring training is in January the Sunday before classes begin
    • Must shadow at least 2 returning Vanguards
    • Must be shadowed by a returning Vanguard
  • Be scheduled for approximately one tour or special event a week
  • Complete at least 14 tours per semester (8 scheduled plus special events)
  • Attend weekly Vanguard meetings when available (not in class)
  • Check in the Vanguard Event binder weekly and sign-up for additional tours
  • Attend Campus Close-Ups (3 in fall and 2 in spring)
  • Arrange to cover assigned tours as needed
  • Provide semester schedule to the scheduler for availability for tours

Behavior and Other Responsibilities

  • Act professionally
  • Never speak negatively about other schools
  • Set a friendly, helpful attitude when preparing for tours
  • When waiting for the tour to begin, socialize with students and families
  • Avoid use of phone or text prior to the start of the tour
  • Speak loudly and clearly
  • Stop and speak to the group
  • Speak to every family in the group and get to know their needs
  • Avoid abbreviations
  • Tailor tour to students interests 
  • Be on time for all tours and special events
  • Dress for the the weather with good walking shoes
  • Be open and honest with tour group and questions
  • End tour on a positive note
  • Know why “I chose UWL” and articulate that to tour

Applying to the Vanguard Organization

The Admissions Office is looking for individuals who are outgoing, friendly, possess excellent communication skills, and are excited about UWL.  Candidates who complete an application will be asked to participate in an individual interview.  After individual interviews are completed, selected applicants will be invited back for a group interview. 

Summer Vanguards will provide daily tours at 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. (Monday & Friday) and at 11 a.m. (Tuesday-Thursday) during the months of June, July, and August.

Selection Timeline:

February 20 and 21, 2024: Group Interviews

  • Selected applicants will be emailed with instructions to sign up for group interview/presentation. 

February 23, 2024: Applicants Notified of Status
