What is the best part about attending UWL?

In my opinion, the best part about attending UWL are all the amazing professors and staff. They are extremely helpful and are willing to go above and beyond to help you. Thanks to UWL's small class sizes, I am able to easily create bonds and relationships with my professors, which translates into letters of recommendation and professional support into the work world.

What class have you enjoyed the most, and why?

I have enjoyed my Environmental Studies class the most! I learned a lot about keeping the environment safe and healthy. Also, we went on many different field trips across the La Crosse and Onalaska area.

Tips for freshmen/incoming students:

Never be afraid to break off and try something new or intriguing by yourself. I wouldn't of joined Vanguards if I didn't follow that advice.

Why did you choose UWL?

I chose UWL first for the size of the university and knowing I would be able to form meaningful connections with my professors. The appeal of smaller class sizes and endless undergraduate opportunities was also a driving factor. Plus, how can you beat living next to the bluffs? It is a gorgeous campus!

The weather! La Crosse is the tropical part of the state! Summers are shiney, fall is as crisp as a honey crisp apple, the winters are mild yet fluffy (SNOW), and the birds chirp louder than thunder in the spring!

What is the best part about attending UWL?

In my opinion, the best part about attending UWL is all of the incredible people I have met throughout my time here. Whether it's learning to roller blade for the first time with one of my friends, chatting about my future with one of my professors during their office hours, or spending my Tuesday night laughing and bowling with the Vanguards, the people of La Crosse have helped me create countless lasting memories.

What class have you enjoyed the most, and why?

One class that I have really enjoyed was my Theories of Communication class, one of the classes in the research core for the Communication Studies major. Going into the class, I was very apprehensive because I viewed research as dull and boring. However, my professor was engaging and passionate about research, and she made me motivated and excited to find research that was fascinating to me. I ended up really enjoying the class, and now I am looking forward to completing my senior research project and presenting it this spring.

What's your favorite building on campus, and why?

Wentz Hall has a special place in my heart because it's where I lived my first year of college and where I got involved in working at the front desk. Also, I met some of my best friends there, so that building has just played a significant role in my college life.

Tips for freshmen/incoming students:

Get involved. Seriously, go to clubs that sound interesting. Get involved in your residence hall and get to know people. Play intramurals. There are so many opportunities on campus, and I would just encourage incoming students to really take the first few weeks of school to go try new clubs and figure out what they are passionate about.

I was set on a different college because my parents told me that was where I was going. Randomly I came up here with a friend for her tour and absolutely fell in love with it. My favorite spot on campus is in the gazebo by the WING technology center. However, it is still quiet and secluded enough that I can focus on my classes.

Tips for freshmen/incoming students:

Introduce yourself to everyone! All of the students and staff at UWL are so friendly and open, so putting yourself out there is not as much of a risk as you think. Whether you're in class or eating in Whitney, meeting someone new is always a good idea.

Why did you choose UW-La Crosse?

I chose UWL for multiple reasons. First of all, I grew up on a farm so big cities were not my thing. I felt (and still do) that UWL combines science and healthcare into a nice package to prepare me for my future.

What else do you do on campus?

There are countless opportunities to become involved on campus and I have greatly appreciated the memories, lessons, and friends I have made by becoming involved. In the past, I have also worked in the REC as an intramural referee.

Joining any kind of organization or group, especially with things you are passionate about, will help you meet new people with the same passions and help with the transition to campus.
