David Dies

David Dies's "Las Gacelas from El Diván del Tamarit" were chosen to be the headlining concert of the 21st Barcelona Festival of Song on July 4 in Barcelona, Spain. The songs were premiered by sought-after tenor James N. Kryshak and pianist Joel Papinoja. This is the first half of a projected twenty-one-song cycle, setting the entirety of Lorca's last book, "El Diván del Tamarit," for tenor and piano.

Jon Ailabouni

Jon Ailabouni, UWL director of jazz studies, received the Dr. Carlo A. Sperati Award from Luther College, his alma mater, during the Luther College Homecoming Concert on Oct. 5 in Decorah, IA. Sperati, a pillar of Luther College and the Lutheran music tradition, was the conductor of the Luther College Concert Band for 38 years until his retirement in 1943. This award is given annually to one alum in recognition of excellence in instrumental music and education.

Kourtney Austin

Kourtney Austin, Music, authored the article "Vocal Fold Onset and Its Effect on the Spectral Envelope" in the "Journal of Voice," published on June 13 by Elsevier. This article is the first in a two-part series on how the process of beginning a singing tone affects the overall timbre and quality of the sound.

Victoria Ratsch

Victoria Ratsch, Music student, performed "Don Giovanni" on Dec. 18, 2024 in Wichita, KS. In addition to a full-scale performance of "Don Giovanni," Ratsch participated in the Opera Scenes Showcase where she sang the roles of Queen from "Iolanthe," Pitti-Sing from "Mikado," and 3rd lady from "Magic Flute."

Kourtney Austin and Stephen Austin

Kourtney Austin and Stephen Austin, both Music, presented "6 Lectures and 5 Masterclasses" at RHM Vocal Arts and Science Symposium on Jan. 31 in Southern Mississippi State University School of Music. As the featured guests for the symposium, the Drs. Austin shared voice pedagogy and science, performing arts health, and acoustics lectures. They also worked with graduate and undergraduate students in masterclasses, helping singers refine their craft.
