We review every application using a holistic approach, looking at the full picture of who you are.

Your academic performance is the most important factor, especially the rigor of your coursework and the strength of your high school transcript. Other considerations may include ACT or SAT test scores, extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership, essays, and letters of recommendation.

Middle 50% of admitted students have class rank in the 68th - 90th percentile 

  • Demonstration of a positive grade trend
  • If class rank is not provided, cumulative grade point average will be considered

Required Minimum Credits
To submit a strong application, students should plan to meet the Recommended Credits listed:

Secondary Factors

Academic preparation is the primary factor considered during the admission review process. However, the following components may strengthen your application:

Test Scores (optional)

  • ACT code: 4672  |  SAT code: 1914
  • Middle 50% of admitted students:
    • ACT: 23 - 27
    • SAT: 1130 - 1270

Letters of Recommendation (optional)

  • Up to two letters will be accepted
  • May be submitted by mail or email

Involvement & Experience

Essays - UWL requires completion of two essays.

  • Essay prompt #1 (250-650 words)
    • Each student is unique. Please tell us about the particular life experiences, talents, commitments, and/or interests you will bring to our campus.
  • Essay prompt #2 (respond to one of the following; 250-650 words)
    • Tell us about any circumstances that may have had an impact on your academic performance.
    • Tell us why you are interested in attending UW-La Crosse and what aspects of the campus are especially important to you.

The Wisconsin Guarantee

Beginning in Fall 2025, new freshman applicants from Wisconsin may be eligible for guaranteed admission to UW-La Crosse.

Eligibility
Wisconsin residents must meet one of the following:

  • Enrollment in a public, private, or tribal high school in Wisconsin and rank in the top 10% of your class (upon completion of 11th grade)
  • Enrollment in homeschool or virtual private school with an ACT score at or above the 90th percentile (nationally)
  • Selection as a National Merit Scholarship finalist

Participation Requirements

  • Complete the Universities of Wisconsin application for admission during your senior year of high school (or final year of homeschool or online school)
  • Meet all admission requirements as outlined by the Board of Regents
  • Demonstrate successful completion of senior year coursework
  • Admission may be revoked due to deterioration of academic performance, misrepresentation of academic information, academic misconduct, or failure to receive a high school diploma.
