Department Chair Feedback Process
All faculty and IAS that are eligible to vote in the election of their department chair will be given an opportunity to provide feedback regarding their chair.
The purpose is to provide formative, not summative, professional development feedback to chairs and identify areas of strength and improvement. This feedback will not be used in any formal evaluation of department chairs, such as merit, promotion, or post-tenure review.
Schedule of Feedback Collection
The collection of feedback will be conducted in the spring semester by the Dean's office via electronic survey, during the second year of a chair's 3-year term.

Feedback Survey
The electronic survey will be anonymous, and consist of the following items:
Quantitative
five-point scale (strongly agree - strongly disagree) questions associated with key chair-related domains:
- advances the department toward agreed upon goals.
- has fair and open communications with faculty, staff, and students.
- facilitates open and professional communication amongst faculty, staff, and students.
- allocates resources in ways consistent with department priorities.
- assures that personnel and non-personnel resources are utilized effectively to reflect department priorities.
- fairly and equitably mentors faculty and IAS through the retention, tenure, promotion, merit, and/or post-tenure review process.
- facilities positive relationships among and between faculty and staff.
- clearly communicates departmental expectations based on the bylaws for personnel evaluation (annual review, merit, retention, tenure, post-tenure review, promotion).
a single overall performance item indicating your degree of confidence in the department chair:
- Exceptional confidence - appears to be doing an outstanding job as chair
- High confidence - appears to be doing a good job as chair
- Moderate confidence - appears to be doing an adequate job as chair
- Low confidence - appears to be doing a weak job as chair
- No confidence - doing a poor job as chair.
Qualitative
three written comment boxes will be provided, soliciting feedback on the following items:
- areas of strength
- areas of improvement
- other comments.
Proceedures
The Associate Dean for Operations within CSH will be in charge of the feedback process. Once the feedback is collected, a summary report will be provided to the Dean containing:
- quantitative results
- thematic summary of qualitative results - no direct quotes will be provided to ensure anonymity and only the Associate Dean for Operations will see the raw comments.
Upon receipt, the Dean will schedule an in-person meeting with the Chair and provide the summary report. The Dean is encouraged to share their own views, however, with this feedback the Dean's Office serves as a conduit for providing departmental feedback to their chair.
