As an international student or scholar in the US, it's very important that you comply with US tax law and understand the tax filing requirements required of your visa status. Don't forget that if any of the following circumstances apply to you, you must file a US tax return:
- You worked in the US
- You received a stipend, grant or allowance in 2025
- You had no earnings
If you were working, you would've been subject to Federal and State taxes and therefore must file a tax return each year. If you did not work or receive income in the US you're still legally obliged to file a tax return (Form 8843) to declare no earnings.
The Universities of Wisconsin works with Glacier Tax Prep to help guide international students who work on campus through the tax preparation process. More information about this software and services can be found on the Universities of Wisconsin Shared Services Site.
