  5. Please pay attention to the training dates- the training is mandatory and offers a chance to get to know the rest of the team, receive important training tools and resources on working with our participants and hear about the logistics that will help run our programs smoothly.

Academic Year Tutoring (M&T) - APPLY HERE!

Mentoring and Tutoring (M&T) Program

We are looking for mentors for all 3 sites.

Tuesdays @ UWL Centennial Hall Wednesday @ UWL Centennial Hall Thursdays:  Ho-Chunk Youth and Learning Center located at Three Rivers House

4th-7th grade students

5:00 -7: 00 pm

6th-12th grade students

5:00-7:00 pm

We will be working with Youth attending their after school program- 3rd-10th grade students

4:00pm - 6:15 pm

Spring 2026 Pre-College Mentor Interest Survey

Mentor Tutor Job and Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Attend and participate in all staff training, tutoring and enrichment activities, and evaluation sessions
  • Provide motivation and enthusiasm to tutees through leadership role modeling 
  • Assist tutee with individual and group homework assignments, projects and activities.
  • Collaborate with other staff in planning, coordinating and leading enrichment activities.
  • Establish goals for yourself and tutee 
  • Evaluate and keep track of student progress with the completion of tutoring logs 
  • Keep Precollege Coordinator informed of significant events, developments, and problems of tutees 
  • Follow all school/university rules and policies 
  • Other related duties as determined by Site Supervisor 

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS: 

  • Assist Precollege staff with discipline and supervision of individual students or groups of students consistent with program rules and guidelines 
  • Communicate with Precollege staff about any anticipated absences in a timely and professional manner 
  • Be proactive (see, and then do, what needs to be done), act as a leader and role model regarding all activities during programming 
  • Research and procure supplemental academic materials for students 
  • Refrain from using cell phones or other electronics and doing schoolwork during programming hours. 

There are additional roles available for each site. Staff who are interested in these roles are also required to be a Mentor. 

Transportation Coordinator

  • Coordinate with Precollege Coordinator to create and solidify pick up and drop off routes. Main transportation delegate--will be in charge of updating and informing drivers and co-pilots.

Food Coordinator

  • Retrieving and returning the food cart, serving food at programming, occurs everyday for on-campus programing days.

Driver/Co-Pilot

  • A two person job, coordinating with the Transportation Coordinator to pick up and drop off youth. Must complete additional training for driver authorization.

What do Pre-College Mentors do?

We are pleased that you are considering mentoring with our Pre-College programs. Currently, you can choose from 3 different options through our office. Each of these options will provide you the opportunity to work directly with a student after school or in the early evening.
Norwalk Enrichment Activity
Expectations of Mentors:

  • Commitment to meet each week with assigned student(s) (15-20 hours or more per semester)
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings
  • Engagement during all tutoring and enrichment activities
  • Plan and facilitate at least 1 enrichment activity (varies across sites). We have a ton of resources and some activities pre-planned out to choose from! 

A typical Off-Campus session follows the general format: 

  • 3:45 Mentors gathered at a spot on campus and transport down to the Three Rivers House (downtown La Crosse). 
  • 4:00 Youth and Mentors arrive to the site- welcome and snack time 
  • 4:15- 5:00 Mentors work with youth and offer tutoring services 
  • 5:00- 6:00 Mentors continue to partner with their students while they engage in activities run by the Center's staff or other community partnerships 
  • 6:00-6:15 Mentors pack up and head back to campus 

A typical On-campus evening session follows this general format:

  • 4:30 Mentors arrive at Centennial Hall and meet in room 3100 for staff briefing
  • 4:45-5:00 Mentees arrive- Mentors are either waiting down by the circle to walk students up or are a driver or co-pilot and bring mentees onto campus
  • 5:00-5:30 We eat dinner family style and create a "soft landing" for the evening
  • 5:30-6:00 Break out into 2 or 3 different classrooms and work on homework, studying, or other academic activities. This will vary based on the particular student you're working with
  • 6:00-6:30 Students can continue to work on homework or academic practice. Students can also complete career readiness and/or college prep activities.
  • 6:30-6:55 Mentors lead enrichment activities. These include arts and crafts, games, outside activities, Kahoot quizzes, teambuilding challenges, etc.
  • 6:55-7:00 Clean up, pack up, and dismiss students
  • 7:00-7:15 Staff Debrief

Work Study Students

If you would like to request work study in Precollege Tutoring, please complete the appropriate questionnaire for the year you are interested in serving as a work study student and submit to Financial Aid as soon as possible. Students need to read the information on the site before filling out the questionnaire. Only students who are awarded FWS can complete the questionnaire.

Expectations of Work Study Students:

  • Commitment to meet each week with assigned student(s) (15-20 hours or more per semester)
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings
  • Plan and facilitate at least 1 enrichment activity (varies across sites)
  • Take on additional lead roles (lead tutor, enrichment coordinator, co-pilot, etc.)
  • Timely completion of necessary paperwork (payroll, time sheets, etc.)

Technology and Computer Science (TACOS) Camp - APPLY HERE!

Camp Technology And COmputer Science (TACO)

TACOS Camp is a day camp for students entering 7th-9th grade in Spring 2026. This camp will focus on fundamentals of computer science and first -hand experience! This summer campers will learn about videography! 10-15 students from the greater La Crosse area will spend 6 hours per day on campus Monday-Friday to form an intercultural community along with pre-college staff and college student camp counselors. Potential counselors do NOT need to have experience in the field! We will be working with campus partners to lead student sessions! 

2026 Dates: June 18th - 12th

Staff Training: June 2nd

Time: 9 am-3 pm
Location: UWL Centennial Hall

Inspire U-APPLY HERE!

Inspire U

This is an Leadership and Career Pathways focused residential summer camps for incoming 9th-12th grade students! Counselors and campers will stay on campus in Eagle Hall. This is a very hands on and engaging overnight camp. Spots fill up very quickly for interested students and camp counselors! No experience needed in the field of business and financial advising we will be working with faculty as well as partnerships from the community who will facilitate engaging hands on activities! 

2026 Dates: June 15th - 19th

Staff Training: June 2nd - 3rd

Time: Monday 10am - Friday 4pm 
Location: Overnight- Eagle Hall- La Crosse Community

Emerging Leaders of the Future (ELF) Camp Counselor - APPLY HERE!

Emerging Leaders of the Future (ELF) Camp 

ELF Camp is a day camp for students entering 7th-9th grade in Spring 2026. This camp will focus on leadership and intercultural identity development. 10-15 students from the greater La Crosse area will spend 6 hours per day on campus Monday-Friday to form an intercultural community along with pre-college staff and college student camp counselors.

As part of the curriculum, the participants learn from each other, self-exploration, and engage in enrichment activities to discover leadership styles and strengths. This will be achieved through active dialogue circles and workshops that explore leadership qualities and cultural identity through the lens of various identities and provide students with knowledge and skills to develop their own leadership skills and continue their journey to discover themselves.

2026 Dates: July 13th - 17th

Staff Training: July 7th - 8th 

Time: 9 am-3 pm
Location: UWL Centennial Hall

My River Adventure (MRA)

This is an environmental focused residential summer camps for incoming 9th-12th grade students! Counselors and campers will stay on campus in Eagle Hall. This is a very hands on and engaging overnight camp. Spots fill up very quickly for interested students and camp counselors! No experience needed in the field of environmental studies- we will be working with faculty from the River Studies Center who will facilitate engaging hands on activities! 

2025 Dates: July 27th - 31st

Staff Training: July 21st - 22nd

Time: Monday 10am - Friday 4pm 
Location: Overnight- Eagle Hall- La Crosse Community
