Organizational and Professional Communication Emphasis


Organizational recruiters, employers and researchers have all concluded that communication is incredibly important for organizations to function effectively. In fact, the top five attributes that recruiters are looking for in recent college graduates are building and maintaining interpersonal relationships at work, listening skills, the ability to effectively communicate in groups, and the ability to speak in public. Knowing how important communication skills are to employers demonstrates the significance of communication as the means by which things get done in an organization. While communication skills are important to all organizational members, understanding how communication is used to create organizational realities is crucial for organizational leaders. Students in this emphasis have the opportunity to study how to communicate in a variety of work-related contexts; for example: interviewing, leadership, public relations, group communication, and computer mediated communication. Graduates have been successful in getting positions in diverse communication areas such as: management, human resources, public relations, marketing, community relations, and sales.

Student Learning Outcomes: Organizational and Professional Communication Emphasis

Students in the Organizational and Professional Communication emphasis will achieve the following learning outcomes:

Message Construction: Create and communicate messages appropriate to diverse organizational audiences, purposes, and contexts

Organizational Communication Perspectives: Employ organizational communication theories, perspectives, principles, and concepts to analyze communication in organizations

Diverse Organizational Perspectives: Articulate and adapt to diverse perspectives in organizations and among organizational stakeholders

Communication Studies Major: Organizational and Professional Communication 
Emphasis Requirements

All colleges, excluding Teacher Certification programs): 39 credits 

Core requirements: CST 190, 301, 498, 499. Required: CST 260, 350, 452. At least three credits from the following: CST 351, 354, 355, 360, 365, 380.

Nine credits of electives selecting a course from each of the following emphasis areas:

  • Interpersonal Communication Emphasis (three credits): CST 230, 330, 332, 333, 334, 336, 337, 338
  • Advocacy & Communication Criticism Emphasis (three credits): CST 210, 215, 310, 315, 410, 412, 413, 415, 419
  • Broadcast & Digital Media Emphasis (three credits): CST 270, 271, 274, 370, 371, 372, 374, 376, 378, 471

Electives (minimum six credits) from any CST course excluding CST 110.

Communication Studies Minor: Organizational and Professional Communication 
Emphasis Requirements

(All colleges, excluding Teacher Certification programs): 24 credits 

Required: CST 190, 260, 350, 452. At least three credits from the following: CST 351, 354, 355, 360, 365, 380.

Nine credits of electives selecting a course from each of the following emphasis areas:
