Weixu Lu

Weixu Lu, Communication Studies, authored the article "Theorizing with purpose: A five-step approach to motivate and guide students in communication theory courses" in the "Journal of Communication Pedagogy," published on Aug. 1 by Central States Communication Association. This study was sponsored by a CATL scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) grant. It addresses the challenges of effectively teaching communication theories to undergraduate students by introducing a five-step process in teaching. Assessment results from two semesters were compared to evaluate the efficacy of this model, showing significant improvements in students’ comprehension of theories and ability to theorize communication phemomena.

Weixu Lu and Ariel Beaujot

Weixu Lu, Communication Studies, and Ariel Beaujot, History, presented "Serendipity and sustainability: The extended life of an urban location-based storytelling project" at 75th International Communication Association Annual Conference on June 12 in Denver, CO. This presentation featured Dr. Beaujot’s long-running Hear, Here La Crosse oral history project and its vital role in fostering a strong sense of place among local community members. Through the lens of urban communication, Dr. Lu and Dr. Beaujot examined the factors that contributed to both the successes and challenges of integrating this narrative initiative into K-12 education, community events, and even its unexpected adoption by local Pokémon Go players.
