Computer Security and Antivirus Protection

Protecting your computer from malware and viruses is essential for safe computing. Modern operating systems include built-in security features, but staying protected requires keeping your system updated and practicing safe browsing habits.

Best Practices for All Users:

  • Keep your operating system and software updated
  • Be cautious with email attachments and links
  • Only download software from trusted sources
  • Use strong, unique passwords
  • Enable multi-factor authentication when available

Faculty and Staff

  • Campus computers are configured to use Cisco Secure Endpoint (formerly Cisco AMP) virus protection software
  • Keep your system updated and follow campus security policies

Students and Personal Devices

Windows 10/11

Windows Defender (also called Microsoft Defender Antivirus) is built into Windows and provides robust protection for most users. It runs automatically when you keep Windows updated.

No additional antivirus software is required for most Windows users. Simply ensure Windows Update is enabled.

macOS

macOS includes built-in security protections (XProtect and Gatekeeper). For most users, keeping macOS updated is sufficient protection.

Additional Antivirus Options

If you prefer third-party antivirus software, consider:

  • Bitdefender (Windows/Mac)
  • Malwarebytes Premium (Windows/Mac)
  • Norton 360 (Windows/Mac)
  • Available at retail stores or online from trusted vendors

Important: Never run two antivirus programs simultaneously. This can cause system conflicts and performance issues.

If You Suspect an Infection

Signs of infection may include: slow performance, unexpected pop-ups, programs you didn't install, or unusual system behavior.

Windows

  1. Run a full scan with Windows Defender (Windows Security app)
  2. Download and run Malwarebytes Free for a second opinion
  3. If issues persist, contact the Help Desk

Mac

  1. Download and run Malwarebytes for Mac
  2. Check for and remove suspicious login items and browser extensions
  3. If issues persist, contact the Help Desk
