Closed Captioning (CC) services for media

For more information on Closed Captioning (CC) please contact the Eagle Help Desk

UWL works with a third party vendor for “Closed Captioning”. Closed captioning of education media should be an integral responsibility of UWL’s mission and faculty are encouraged to be proactive providing CC with video materials used for teaching.

When requesting CC service at UWL, it is important to know first if this is an immediate need for an identified student taking a class or a proactive request for future class use.

  • If your request is for a current identifiable student needing this service, please contact the Access Center at 608.785.6900 and they will assist you with your CC request.
  • If your request is proactive for future compliance, then you will need to contact the Eagle Help Desk at 608.785.8774. NOTE: There is a $2.10 charge per minute for CC transcription by the third party vendor. Please refer to your department ADA for available funding. You will also need to set up a Mymedia account through ITS and an account with the third party transcription service. ITS will work with you through the process once a help desk ticket is submitted. Once you are familiar with the process, you will be able to address future request on your own. All videos need to be in a file format for closed captioning. If your video is not in a file format, ITS can convert your DVD or videotape into a file format.

For those interested, the URL listed below will take you to Screencast-O-Matic. This is a free (15 min limit for free version) screen casting tool that instructors can use to create video casts or screencast. This would be a do-it-yourself solution if you prefer doing the captioning yourself and the video is 15 minutes or less.
