Native American Heritage Month 2022

Join us monthly as we celebrate a different community on campus. UWL Celebration Months amplifies voices from the many vibrant cultures and communities on campus. Join us throughout the year as we celebrate our friends and neighbors and gain a deeper understanding of our community.

The purpose of this project is to give others on our campus, in the surrounding community, and anyone that visits the UWL website a chance to learn more about different experiences and perspectives of the community that we are celebrating on any given month.

Allies and advocates are invited to share their stories.

White House statement from President Biden referring to A Proclamation on National Native American Heritage Month, 2022:
“During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate Indigenous peoples past and present and rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, promoting Tribal self-determination, and upholding the United States’ solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations."

UWL Indigenous Land Recognition Statement

We would like to recognize that the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse occupies the land of the Ho-Chunk people. Please take a moment to celebrate and honor this ancestral Ho-Chunk land, and the sacred lands of all indigenous peoples.

Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts

UWL dedicates Center for the Arts to artist, alum Truman Lowe. Truman Lowe (‘69) was a nationally renowned sculptor and educator. Raised in the
Ho-Chunk community near Black River Falls, WI,
he made art that honors his heritage and the woodland environment of this region.
