About the film

Findings from UWL’s campus climate survey conducted in 2013 found that when compared with their white peers, students of color were more likely to experience bullying and intimidation; more likely to be stereotyped; and more likely to experience discrimination. Similar findings were reported on campus climate surveys conducted in 2004 and 2008. Not only did the most recent survey continue to show that students of color experience lower levels of satisfaction with the climate both on campus and in the classroom, but they are also more likely than their white peers to seriously consider leaving the university. The film, “Inclusive Negligence: Helping Educators Address Racial Inequality at UWL,” is a student-driven project created as a tool for professional development to help faculty, staff, and administrators create a campus environment in which students of color feel safe, valued, and included. This film was written, directed, and edited by Kalon Bell (’16), Jamie Capetillo (’17), Bobby Black (’16), Kathy Niedorowski (’16), and Karter Etchin (’19). The faculty advisor for this project was Dr. Laurie Cooper Stoll, Associate Professor of Sociology and the founding Director of the Institute for Social Justice. It was funded by a College of Liberal Studies Inclusive Excellence Small Grant.
