Diversity Statement

The University of La Crosse-Wisconsin Counseling and Testing Center is committed  to providing culturally- and trauma-informed services to the UWL community. Our staff recognizes the inherent importance of intersectionality  across gender, sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability status, immigration  status, citizenship status, body size and body image, age, generation, nationality,  political affiliation, spirituality, religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, military  affiliation, education, and family system, among other facets of diversity and  identity, to one’s health and experience of being in the world.

We strive to promote inclusion and to affirm and celebrate diversity in its broadest  sense across all areas. We recognize that our commitment to diversity and inclusivity is an active, life-long journey. We know that only through an awareness of ourselves as cultural  beings can we hope to hold space for the experiences of others. Therefore, clinical  training, discourse, and action in topics of diversity and multiculturalism are  essential to our staff culture and integral to the CTC training program.

Life in La Crosse

Being conveniently located amidst the scenic bluffs on the Mississippi River, the La Crosse area offers a unique blend of recreational activities (e.g., hiking, biking, and kayaking), live music and festivals, and exploration (whether it be meandering our quirky downtown area or a day trip to the Twin Cities). Located in Southwest Wisconsin, we have several daytrip/weekend trip options including: Minneapolis/St. Paul (2.5 hours), Madison (2.5 hours), Milwaukee (3 hours), Duluth and the North Shore (4 hours), Door County (4 hours), and Chicago (4.5 hours).

Some of our staff’s favorite things to do in La Crosse include: hiking through the bluffs (and exploring for new hiking trails), relaxing in a hammock along the Mississippi River, skiing the slopes of Mt. La Crosse, grabbing a cold brew coffee at one of La Crosse's locally owned coffee shops, paddle boarding on nearby Lake Neshonoc, trail running through the forests and prairies of the Hixon Forest, and enjoying a sunset from one of the many bluff outlooks.
