Entrance Loan Counseling

Important Information Before You Begin

Before receiving a federal student loan, borrowers MUST complete an Entrance Loan Counseling session. (If you have previously had either a Federal Stafford Loan or a Federal Direct Loan, you have already met this obligation). This online session will take about 20-30 minutes to complete. 

Undergraduate students will complete the Federal Direct Loan Entrance Counseling. 

Graduate students who complete the Graduate Entrance Loan Counseling will meet the entrance loan counseling requirement for both Direct Loans and Direct Graduate PLUS loans.
 
You should have your FSA ID (the user-selected username and password) handy. 

Go to studentloans.gov. When you get to the page, click on LOG IN. After you have loggled in, go to Entrance Counseling and follow the directions from there. 

Graduate Entrance Loan Counseling

Important Information Before You Begin

Before receiving a federal student loan, borrowers MUST complete an Entrance Loan Counseling session. (If you have previously had either a Federal Stafford Loan or a Federal Direct Loan, you have already met this obligation. However, if you are applying for your first Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, you will need to complete this session).This online session will take about 30 minutes to complete. 

Graduate students should complete the Combination - Stafford and PLUS Loans counseling.
You should have your FSA ID (the user-selected username and password) handy. 

Go to www.studentloans.gov.
When you are asked to select the school that should be notified, you should: 

  1. Click on U.Ss School/U.S. Territory Schools
  2. Choose a state (Wisconsin)
  3. Search school by name (Universtiy of Wisconsin-La Crosse)

Select student type.

Once you have completed the entire process, be sure to choose "Show Form for Printing" and print out a copy of the form for your own records.

Direct Loan Exit Loan Counseling

Important Information Before You Begin
1- You should have your FSA ID (the user-selected username and password) handy. 

2- The Exit Counseling Session will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and you must complete the entire session in one sitting. If you exit before completing the session, you will be required to start over from the beginning. 

3- As part of the session, you will need to supply contact information for your next of kin (usually your parents), two references who live at a different address than your next of kin (all three references must live at a different address).
