The UWL Teacher Residency Program Has Arrived!
TRP Logo
The UWL Paid Teacher Residency Program is a new, mission driven program supported by committed donors and partnerships. It began in the 2025-26 school year with a cohort of ten talented future teachers.
It brings together UWL faculty and students, PK-12 school partners and donors to support innovative solutions that address the teacher crisis and addresses workforce development needs. The UWL Paid Teacher Residency Program supports current and future educators through a co-teaching model for Elementary Middle Education/Special Education majors that helps equip teachers in new collaborative ways to meet the needs of all learners.
The purpose of a paid teacher residency program is to prepare new teachers for long-term success in the classroom by offering hands-on, immersive training in a real school environment — while providing financial support
In the Teacher Residency Program (TRP) ...
Students will launch their career with a one-year paid teacher residency that combines hands-on classroom experience with coursework. Through this new, mission-driven program, the following opportunities are included:
- Co-teach with an experienced mentor teacher.
- Receive financial support thru scholarships to fully engage in the experience.
- Make an impact in PK-12 schools from day one.
Why a Paid Teacher Residency?
Teachers who go through residency programs are more likely to stay in the profession, especially in high-needs schools.
The supportive, scaffolded entry into teaching reduces burnout.
Teachers who participate in residency programs enter the classroom with the preparation and confidence of a seasoned educator, meaning higher-quality instruction from day one.
Application & Selection Process
Students were/are selected for the residency through a highly competitive process and must be dually certified to teach in both general education and special education.
Students can inquire about the application process during their admissions period to the school of education.
