Government documents

A page within Murphy Library

This page describes the government documents collections available at Murphy Library.

There's also a Government Information resource guide that highlights some of the most important government information resources and finding tools used at UW-La Crosse.

Federal Depository Library Program  Federal Government Documents

Some 220,000 items (190,000 titles) are held, most obtained through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).  Materials include books,  periodicals, maps, CDs/DVDs and other formats, and also include reproductions on microfiche or microfilm.  U.S. government documents are located in open stacks in the basement, shelved in call number order using the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification Scheme.  They are listed in the library catalog, and they may be checked out.

Subject areas emphasized: Business, Education, Health, Physical Education and Recreation (mirroring the subject strengths of UWL).  Geographic areas emphasized: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa

The modern FDLP collection increasingly consists of links to selected government resources published on the web.  Over 45,000 government electronic resources may be found and accessed through the library catalog.

The Map Room integrates materials collected by the Geography and Earth Science Department over many years with materials received at UWL through the FDLP from 1982-2008.  Over 40,000 topographic maps are held, along with planimetric maps, geologic maps, image maps, and geologic and topographic atlases.  Map Room FDLP maps received since 2004 are listed in the library catalog.  Map room materials may be checked out.

Wisconsin Document Depository Program  Wisconsin Government Documents

Some 16,000 items (9,000 titles) are held, most obtained through the Wisconsin Document Depository Program (WDDP).  Wisconsin government documents are located in open stacks in the basement, shelved by WiDoc call numbers.  They are listed in the library catalog, and they may be checked out.

The Wisconsin Digital Archives provided by the WDDP catalogs and digitally preserves Wisconsin government Documents.  Over 700 of these electronic resources may be found and accessed through the library catalog.
