Student iPad requirement

The School of Education (SOE) is committed to staying abreast with current technology trends in our area PK-12 schools, and to supporting 21st century learning environments. As part of this effort,  all teacher candidates are required to have an iPad that meets SOE specifications (see also below) for use in their pre-professional courses and clinical experiences, and strategies for utilizing this technology in future PK-12 classrooms will be incorporated across the curriculum.

The fee for the iPad is financial aid eligible and will appear on the student bill in the semester following admission to the candidate's teacher education program. If the acquisition of an iPad is a financial hardship, please contact us to discuss options.

By working directly with the vendor, we work to provide teacher candidates with the most current version that meets curricular needs at the best possible price. If teacher candidates wish to purchase an iPad in advance of their admission to teacher education, they should get pre-approval from SOE ( to be sure they are purchasing one that meets specifications. Teacher candidates who purchase their own device outside of the SOE process and without pre-approval do so at their own risk. All teacher candidates are required to have the specific iPad version that is approved by SOE as a condition of admission.

iPads and Admission to SOE:

Teacher candidates who are admitted to the School of Education are required to have an iPad that meets SOE specifications. As part of the admissions process, students are provided information on how to purchase the appropriate iPad through the SOE iPad order survey.

Please note that by accepting admission to a UWL teacher education program, teacher candidates are agreeing to the following:

  • The iPad is the candidate's own personal property. Candidates are responsible for the costs associated with loss or damage of their device. The iPad charge is non-refundable.
  • Teacher candidates who are admitted to the School of Education should complete the survey to select their iPad and optional accessories no later than two weeks from the date of their admission letter. By completing this survey, candidates understand that the program fee for the cost of the iPad and any optional accessories will be assessed on their student bill for the following semester.
  • Failure to complete the survey by the due date (above) will result in the inability for a student to progress in the program.
  • Teacher candidates who decide to change their major, change their program, and/or decline admission to the School of Education after completing the iPad survey are required to notify the School of Education ( prior to the first Monday in August (if admitted in spring) or the first Monday in January (if admitted in fall). Students are responsible for the cost of their ordered iPad after that date.

Teacher candidates admitted to their program in Fall 2020 and who have completed the iPad survey by the survey due date will be able to pick up their iPad at the UWL Bookstore upon receiving an email with pick up instructions in Spring 2021. NOTE: you must bring your UWL student ID with you when picking up the iPad.
