Writing Tips

Writing Tips

  • Show don’t tell: give examples, support argument, cite evidence, explain logic
  • Use formal language: avoid cliches and slang and be specific with word choice – say “important” not big reason, say “officer” not cop
  • Use active voice: say “I ate pizza.” NOT “Pizza was eaten by me.”
  • Proofread, edit, repeat
  • Use AI as a tool not a substitute

More Writing Tips

  • Start with a hook – do not use rhetorical questions (Have you ever...?) and (usually) quotations
  • Thesis – specific and reasoned response to a question at issue – anser is unknown, unproven, up for debate and has to matter
  • Use topic and conclusion sentences to frame paragraphs
  • Use transitions to guide the reader
  • Use 3rd person: avoid you, your and you’re - use people, he, she, they, one, the students, a viewer...
