Welcome back from Spring Break! The College of Science and Health is pleased to offer you the second CSH Monthly. There are many exciting events happening on campus in the next few weeks and we wanted to highlight a few of these events that may be of interest to the College.
Please mark your calendars for the Spring 2024 College Meeting. This will be held on April 29, 2024 from 2:00pm-4:30pm in the Union Theater (Union 0120).
The College is currently accepting applications to the CSH Ambassador Program. This program is designed to help promote CSH on campus, off campus, and virtually. If you know of any potential students for this program, please encourage them to apply!

- We are currently accepting ideas for the Summer 2024 publication of Science and Health News. If you have an idea for an article, please contact Assistant Dean Whitney George.
- The Provost’s Office and the Division of Diversity & Inclusion invite applications from UWL faculty to serve as the Director of the McNair Scholars Program. The position includes a .5 (two-course) teaching reassignment each semester along with a summer duty compensated with a stipend paid at 2/9s of the Director’s faculty salary. The position is for a three-year term with opportunity for renewal based on program outcomes and federal grant renewal. The position starts June 1, 2024.
Upcoming Deadlines
- WiSys Spark Grant applications are due April 8, 2024. WiSys Spark Grants are intended to support early-stage research projects and scholarly activities. Proposed projects must be designed to help demonstrate the impact potential of a new concept, technology, or scholarly work. Projects must demonstrate a need for additional development support that would be required for an innovation to achieve real-world impact. Preference will be given to projects where applicants have demonstrated some progress beyond the initial discovery, idea, or concept.
- UWL Discussion Project is coming to UWL May 20-22. Applications are due April 8, 2024.
- CATL SOTL Grant and Course Improvement Grants applications for the 2024-2025 academic year are due May 20, 2024.

- UWL vice chancellor for Diversity & Inclusion open forum, Wednesday, March 20, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Student Union 3314. For those unable to attend in person, the livestream link can be found on UWL’s VC for D&I search website.
- Prairie Springs Distinguished Lecture Series presents Robin Wall Kimmerer, March 21, 7pm. A live-stream of the keynote address is available.

Congratulations to our colleagues:
- Basudeb Bhattacharyya and John May, both Chemistry & Biochemistry, received an Academic Research Enhancement Award from the National Institutes of Health. This research grant, titled "Structure and Function of DcrB, an Enterobacterial Copper Resistance Protein," provides $401,680 over three years to study the structure and function of a copper resistance protein from Salmonella bacteria.
- Tushar Das, Mathematics & Statistics, authored the article "A variational principle in the parametric geometry of numbers "in Advances in Mathematics Volume 437, February 2024, no. 109435 published on Monday, Feb. 19 by Elsevier. Tushar presented "On the mensuration of conformal fractals" at Conference on Functional Analysis and Fractals (CFAF 2024) IIIT Allahabad in India on Feb. 16 online. Tushar presented "Thermodynamic expansions for the Hausdorff dimension of continued fraction Cantor sets via transfer operator perturbation" at the Online Seminar in Diophantine Approximation and Related Topics.
- Canine Companions Facility Dog Rossi, UWL Health Science Interprofessional Research Center and Tara Delong, Recreation Management & Recreational Therapy, presented "Meet Dr. Wags" at What's New Wednesdays on Feb. 28 online.
- Jon Evans, Katherine Evans, and Daniel Plunkett, all Recreation Management & Recreational Therapy, presented "WPRA Recreation Management Pre-Conference Panel Discussion" at Wisconsin Park & Recreation Association Annual Meeting on Jan. 30 in La Crosse, WI.
- Laurie Harmon, Recreation Management & Recreational Therapy; co-presented "Outreach & Recruitment: In it for the long game" at the National Academic Leadership Retreat on Feb. 27 in Palm Springs, California. Laurie presented "WPRA Recreation Management Pre-Conference Panel Discussion" at Wisconsin Park & Recreation Association Annual Meeting on Jan. 30 in La Crosse, WI.
- Susan Kelly, Mathematics & Statistics, authored the article "Charles Warner Cansler" in xford African American Studies Center and was accepted for publication by Oxford University Press.
- Tisha King-Heiden, Biology, was named co-leader of the PFAS Collaborator Group for the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin (FCW) on Feb. 1. Tisha presented "Cultural Humility: Fostering Deeper Community Relationships" at Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center on Feb. 6 in La Crosse, WI. This workshop was co-led with Amanda Goodenough (Goodenough Consulting, LLC) for the UMESC/USGS Diversity Equity Inclusion and Accessibility workshop series. Tisha presented "Sublethal effects of chronic exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides in aquatic organisms" at the Groundwater Coordinating Council (GCC) meeting on Friday, Feb. 16 online.
- Namyun Kil, Recreation Management & Recreational Therapy, co-authored the article "Influence of leisure experiences on smartphone addiction and emotional distress" in World Leisure Journal, published on Feb. 25 by Taylor & Francis.
- Barrett Klein, Biology, co-authored the article "Insects and art (as 1 of 7 articles in a series)" in SEISMA Magazine published on Jan. 25 by SEISMA Magazine.
- Brian Kumm-Schaley, Recreation Management & Recreational Therapy, received the Excellence in Teaching Award at The Academy of Leisure Sciences annual conference on Feb. 1 in New Orleans, LA, where he also co-presented "Leisure Studies: A Shameful Master Narrative?". Brian presented "WPRA Recreation Management Pre-Conference Panel Discussion" at Wisconsin Park & Recreation Association Annual Meeting on Jan. 30 in La Crosse, WI.
- Markus Mika, Biology, co-authored the article "Flammulated owl distribution and habitat associations during the breeding season in the western United States" in Forest Ecology and Management and was accepted for publication by Elsevier.
- Shane Murphy, Physical Therapy, presented "Youth Athlete Health Promotion: Wearable Technologies and Evidence-Based Insights from Sports Medicine " at 29th Annual Adolescent Health Symposium on Feb. 16 online.
- Sujet Sen, Chemistry & Biochemistry, was awarded a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program for his proposal entitled "Fundamentals and Applications of Electrochemically Active Nanofluids for Energy Storage and Conversion". This a very prestigious grant that will benefit many UWL students and the general scientific community in many ways
