About the library funds
Murphy Library Funds Making a Difference
The endowment fund is a pledge of excellence shared by donors who believe that the library is a central part of the teaching and research mission of the university.
The fund was established in 1989 to support and enhance the special needs of the library that were not covered by regular budgets. Today, Murphy Library faces even greater financial challenges in providing the exceptional resources and services that contribute to the level of excellence that defines UWL. In 2016, a second fund, called the Florence Wing Fund, was created to complement the endowment fund in other special programming, service, and activity-based needs of Murphy Library. We thank you for helping Murphy Library make a difference in the La Crosse academic community in the 21st century!
Support the Endowment Fund
The library has identified five major categories for endowment support: collection development, equipment, programming, development, and facility & environmental needs. The endowment fund is a pledge of excellence shared by donors who believe that the library is a central part of the teaching and research mission of the university and an important educational and business resource in the community.
Support the Florence Wing Fund
The Florence Wing Fund is named after Florence Sherwood Wing, the first librarian on campus at the La Crosse State Normal School in 1909. This fund, managed by Murphy Library and administered by the UW-L Foundation, was developed to complement the existing Murphy Library Endowment Fund. It provides a less-restricted mechanism for awarding and distributing support for programs, services, and activities such as:
Enhancement and development of librarianship through research, seminars, conferences, and professional development.
Promotions and/or events such as guest speakers and lecturers, including a series thereof, field trips, equipment, and related expenses.
Enhancement or improvement to the Murphy Library facilities, physical spaces, or technology.
Creation and awarding of student assistantships or scholarships (criteria and application process shall be specified by a committee).
Development of activities and materials that advance and grow the Murphy Library funds.
La Crosse in the Postcard History Series compiled by Laura Godden and Paul Beck is available for purchase.
La Crosse in Light and Shadow: A Pictorial Recollection of La Crosse, Wisconsin edited by Douglas Connell and Edwin Hill is available for purchase.
Gifts are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law as applied to the circumstances of each donor. The endowment fund is managed by the Library Department's Endowment & Recognition Committee. The Florence Wing Fund is managed by the library director. Both funds are administered by the UWL Foundation.
