  3. If anything is listed, click on Details to see more information. (If you have no holds, it will say "no holds.)

Types of Registration Holds

A registration hold is a tool intended to prompt students to resolve outstanding issues before permitting them to enroll in classes for subsequent terms. Please note that you may have multiple registration holds, depending on your situation. Each one needs to be resolved before you can register.

Advising required (Advising-Block Enrollment) holds

The Advising-Block Enrollment hold is used for three different advising situations. Click Details on the hold and then its name to see the reason for the hold and instructions.

  1. Advising Required
    1. Students with an Academic Advising Center advisor, in a teacher education major, or in another major that requires advising must meet with their primary advisor before registering.
    2. Individual advisors may also place an advising hold if they are your primary advisor.
  2. Warning Advising Required
    1. Students who are on academic warning must meet with their primary advisor before registering.
  3. Probation Advising Required
    1. Students who are on academic probation must meet with their primary advisor before registering.

You may have multiple advising appointments, depending on your major/minor and progress.

College/School advising required holds

Your college or school's Deans Office may require a meeting, depending on your major, academic progress, and whether you have been admitted to your declared major or not.

These holds are called "college/school-Block Enrollment" with the applicable school listed in the name.

Contact your college or school to set up an appointment.

Advising required by other offices holds
  1. International student advising: International students are required to talk with their International Education and Engagement (IEE) advisor before registering. This hold is called "Internatn'l Ed-Block Enrollment." Schedule an appointment with your advisor through Navigate or contact the IEE Office in 1140 Centennial Hall.
  2. McNair Program advising: Students in the McNair Program are required to talk with their program advisor. This hold is called "McNair Prog-Block Enrollment." Contact the McNair Program office.
Cashiers/financial holds

You may have an unpaid balance on your student account that is higher than $500. This balance must be paid or lowered below $500 before you can register. These holds start with "Cashiers" in the name.

After paying your bill, the hold usually goes away within 20 minutes. Contact the Cashiers Office if your payment does not release the hold.

Email the Cashiers Office, stop in at 121 Graff Main Hall, or call 608.785.8719.

Registration Holds Timing & Notifications

Advising holds are placed at the latest 7 days prior to the first day of the next registration period. This will give you at least a week to resolve the hold before registration begins, and even longer if you don't register on the first day. During the 3 weeks of registration appointments, no new holds will be added. New registration holds, such as cashiers holds, can be added again 7 days after the last registration appointment has started.

Departments and offices placing the hold must notify you that a hold will be placed. Be sure to check your email. The notification will come early enough to provide you with a reasonable amount of time to resolve the hold. The notification will explain:

  • That the hold is part of the department or office's standard operating procedure
  • Why the hold was placed
  • How to appeal or resolve the hold
  • What happens if you don't resolve the hold
  • Who you should contact to resolve the hold
  • Any applicable deadlines

Departments and offices will send a second notification once the hold has been placed. That notification will contain similar information as the first notification, including how to resolve the hold and who to contact.
