FAQs
Do I have to have any experience to go on an OC trip?
No experience is necessary! Outdoor Connection trips are very beginner friendly and are an excellent way to try something new and/or learn a new skill. The staff are prepared to help out anyone that might be new to the trip activity.
Who leads Outdoor Connection trips? Are they qualified? What role do they serve?
For the most part, UWL students employed by UWL Rec Sports - Outdoor Connection lead the trips. All trip leaders are First Aid, AED & CPR certified and receive specialized outdoor skills training. For some trips/activities, we contract with local guides to provide specialized skills instruction.
Trips leaders plan and organize the trip, teach skills, and facilitate activities while enhancing safety. They are not guides. Our overnight trips in particular operate under a Cooperative Adventure Philosophy, which emphasizes collaboration, shared responsibility, and personal growth through engaging activities. It's about fostering a supportive environment where individuals learn, develop skills, and build relationships while facing challenges together. This philosophy values everyone's contributions, encourages leadership from all participants, and prioritizes safety and fun.
Trip participants will be expected to help out with trip duties including, but not limited to, loading & unloading equipment, setting up tents, cooking and washing dishes.
How much to trips cost?
Trips are operated on a non-profit model. Cost of trips depends on the type of trip and how long it is.
- Day trips can range from $15-$40
- Overnights can range from $75-$100
- Extended break trips range from $500-800
Is any financial assistance available?
Yes, UWL Rec Sports believes that everyone should have access to campus recreation opportunities. The Rec Sports Participation Grant is a means to help provide unforgettable experiences and create lifelong memories for students who may not be able to participate due to financial barriers. Students who are experiencing financial difficulties or barriers to participation are encouraged to apply.

What should I bring/wear?
All activity/camping gear is provided, however if you have your own, you may be able to bring it. When making this decision, its recommend to check with your trip leader first.
While equipment is provided, clothing is not. It depends on the weather and the type of trip. Athletic clothing is usually recommended. We advise against wearing cotton especially for water activities, as this material takes longer to dry once wet.
For overnight trips, a packing list will be provided by your trip leaders.
How does food work on trips? What if I have a dietary restriction?
Food (meals and snacks as applicable) are provided. In advance of every trip, our trip leaders will reach out to ask about dietary restrictions, which we will try our best to accommodate.
Participants are welcome to bring their own snacks as well.
Can I go on a trip if I’m not a UWL student?
Yes! We have different prices for students and non-students.
What happens if the weather is bad?
For the most part, trips run rain (or snow) or shine! However, trips may be canceled due to unsafe weather or local conditions. We encourage participants to dress appropriately for the weather and come with a good attitude!
