Sustainable Student of the Month 2025-2026

February 2026 - Sarah Dollak:

Sarah has:

  • Completed a research project exploring the Rights of Nature
  • Interned with Safer Playspaces and Community Environments (SPACE), helping remove rubber turf from playgrounds and replace it with natural materials due to environmental and health concerns
  • Worked with K-12 Energy Education Program to plan renewable every education sessions for elementary students
  • Intern with Sustainability Institute and planning a recycled art project for the 2026 Earth Fair

"I am majoring in English: Literary and Cultural Studies and have a minor in Sustainability and Environmental Studies. I am passionate about sustainability because there is so much beauty in the world that everyone deserves to see and experience and I love knowing I can help make this happen."

December 2025 - Emma Gibbons:

Emma is an Environmental Science Major with a minor in Digital Media Studies and Design. She is passionate about encouraging mindful fashion choices reducing textile waste, which inspired her to initiate this campaign. Emma also ran the No New November collaborating with: UWL Students for Sustainability, UWL Sustainability, UWL Center for Civil Dialogue and Civic Engagement, Larsons General Store, UWL, and Remake Our World. She has coordinated multiple events on and off campus. Emma says, "we have enough clothes for the next 6 generations! We need to make sustainability our new normal."

November 2025 - Jacob Sabir & Thomas Giere:

Thomas and Jacob are sustainability advocates and passionate on cutting down single-use plastics on campus. With help from a Green Fund Grant they funded and installed a new filling station in the Student Union. They had also created a short survey to learn more about student habits, accessibility to clean water, and opinions on removing plastic bottles from meal swipe options.

Thomas is a Cultural Anthropology major and a minor in psychology. Thomas says, "I'm passionate about sustainability because I love the outdoors and want to see a future where everyone can enjoy the beauty of our planet. Small changes in our habits can make a big difference in reducing waste pollution in our community."

Jacob is a Geographic Information Systems major with a minor in Cultural Anthropology & Music. Jacob says, "our goal is to make sustainability more accessible on campus. Adding more convenient places to refill bottles helps reduce plastic waste and encourages everyone to make simple, more eco-friendly choices".

March 2025 - Felicia Ritzke:

Felicia serves as UWL Sustainability's Sustainability Director for the UWL Student Association. In her role, she works to amplify student voices and drive sustainability initiatives on campus. Felicia is a Psychology major with a minor in Sustainability and Environmental Studies. Her passion for environmental advocacy leads her to collaborate and connect with students, faculty, and staff to promote sustainability and environmental awareness at UWL.

Felicia has worked on organizing events such as the marsh clean up, sustainable products in the campus food pantry to provide students with eco-friendly essentials, food waste reduction efforts on campus, and Earthapalooza.

February 2025 - Quinn McClure:

With the help of a Youth Climate Action Fund from Bloomberg Philanthropy grant Quinn was able to add 20 additional bike parking locations in downtown La Crosse. This program allowed "youth" aged 15-24 to fund sustainability projects in their communities.
